Punter's Pick

Norwich are a generously priced 5/4 to take all three points with Bet365, and with home advantage against a nervous looking opponent they should be backed at this price. With both defences also looking far from secure on the opening day of the season, over 2.5 goals at 10/11 with the same firm also looks to be firmly on the cards.

Newly promoted Norwich City’s return to the top flight continues with their first home fixture back in the top flight against an already beleaguered looking Newcastle United side, with both teams looking to get off the mark this season.

Encouraging signs for Canaries in opening day defeat

After being paired with reigning European Champions Liverpool on the opening day of the season, Norwich would have rightly felt their worst fears were being realized as they slipped 4-0 down inside the opening 42 minutes at Anfield. However to their credit, Daniel Farke’s side did a great job of limiting any further damage and emerged with some credit after a strong second half performance where they made the champions of Europe look distinctly pedestrian at times. A 4-1 defeat was the end outcome, and there was enough in their second half showing, particularly in attack to suggest that they have the tools to compete in the Premier League.

They will however need to quickly get street smart at the back and cut out the errors that may have gone unpunished in the Championship, but will be seized upon in the top division. The defence was particularly at fault for allowing an endless supply of crosses against Liverpool, and will need to learn quickly that the quality in the top flight will seize upon such weaknesses.

All gloom for the Toon?

Being a Newcastle United fan is hardly a happy experience at the best of times, but with the departure of Rafa Benitez and the low key appointment of ‘safe hands’ Steve Bruce, fans have hardly much to cheer about this summer. With key players such as Ayoze Perez and Salamon Rondon also departing, there is more than an air of relegation fodder hanging around the Toon Army. With several unproven replacements signed at a time the club needed to bring in established Premier League pedigree (Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck both being available for example), much hinges on little heralded but record signing Joelinton, and Miguel Almiron, who showed glimpses of his ability towards the back end of last season.

An opening day defeat to last season’s perennial away day underachievers Arsenal also did little to dispel the increasing reality that this could be a season of struggle on Tyneside. With little threat upfront and a defensive error gifting the Gunners a goal, Steve Bruce will have a hard job lifting his players in these early days of the season.

Norwich ready for lift off?

Backed by a raucous home crowd, the Canaries will be bursting at the seam to get amongst an under fire and low on confidence Newcastle team, and can fully be expected to come flying out of the traps. Without Rafa Benitez’s tactical nous this season, it is difficult to see how Newcastle will come up with a gameplan to quieten the home team or try and assert their greater Premier League experience on their newly promoted opponents. An early Canaries strike looks like it could prove enough to knock the stuffing out of the visitors, but with the home team showing plenty of fallibility in defence last week, it could prove to be an entertaining afternoon at Carrow Road.
