Bramall Lane

Punter's Pick

Sheffield United welcome Manchester United to Bramall Lane in a game between two teams who are separated by a solitary point prior to kick-off. Sheffield United have already shown their mettle against some of the big teams and will be looking to add Manchester United to the list of top tier opponents they have taken points from. Can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keep United’s run going and leapfrog their opponents in the table?

Sheffield United come into this game having gone unbeaten in their last five league games. Away draws at Watford, West Ham and Tottenham have been complemented by home wins against Arsenal and Burnley. Chris Wilder’s men have also run Liverpool and Leicester City close in games this season which will give confidence to the Yorkshire side that they can pull off another amazing result here against an indifferent United side. Pundits and fans alike have commented on the work ethic of the Sheffield United players but they have shown real quality in getting into positions to attack and combining touches between players to get in behind their opponents backline. John Lundstrum has particularly impressed in recent games with Lys Mousset supporting well. The backline has been solid and the team have used that foundation to ensure they are always in games and able to take something from the fixture.

Manchester United have turned around their own fortunes after a period where they didn’t win a game in six fixtures across all competitions. The team have now won five of their last six and the mood in the camp is more positive despite a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in between those results. The team have continued to progress in the cup competitions including the Europa League and making it into the quarter-finals of the League Cup but are nine points away from the Champions League spots. Their fortunes have improved as the likes of Anthony Martial have returned from injury to boost their attacking options and their youngsters like Scott McTominay continue to impress. Solskjaer will be hoping to stay within touching distance of the top four so investments can be made during January to help the team push on as well as the return of Paul Pogba to boost their ranks.

In team news Sheffield United could be forced into making a change in their defence for the first time this season. John Egan is currently having a head injury assessed and if the defender is deemed unfit for the clash Chris Wilder will have to make a change in a backline that has served him so well this season.

Manchester United have been dealt further injury blows with news that Scott McTominay will be out for a few weeks. Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic are also unavailable despite returning to training with Paul Pogba still out. This could see Juan Mata or Jesse Lingard slot into one of the midfield spots with Martial and Rashford both likely to lead the line up front.

Manchester United start this game as favourites but the odds reflect a respect in the market for how well Sheffield United have played. The Red Devils are priced at 11/10 with Bet365 but we feel with their injuries this is too risky to take. Instead we are backing over 2.5 goals at 11/10. Sheffield United could be asked to shift their defence for the first time this season and with their pressing style we feel they will get chances against Man United. This should lead to an entertaining encounter where we see goals from two attacking teams.
