St Mary’s Stadium

Punter's Pick

The two games between these sides last season produced the grand total of three goals, so both sides not to score at ⅘ with Bet365 warrants serious consideration given the goal shy nature of both teams. If Newcastle do edge the game it is likely to be by the single goal, so a winning margin of one goal at 3/1, again with Bet365 looks like an appealing proposition.

Southampton welcome Bournemouth to St Mary’s Stadium to kick off the latest round of Premier League games. Both teams come into this frixture having won prior to the international break and currently sit in the top half of the table. Only goal difference separates the teams at this stage and this promises to be an entertaining encounter between the south coast rivals.

Southampton come into this game in good form having secured seven points from their last three games, including away wins over Brighton and Sheffield United and an impressive home draw against Manchester United. The Saints have proven to be strong defensively and despite some good performances are short of firepower when it comes to goals. Both recent wins were 1-0 and in their six games in all competitions this season, they have found the back of the net twice in only one game. Saints fans could have been forgiven for thinking their goal troubles were over after summer signing Moussa Djenepo scored an amazing solo goal in their win over Sheffield United. However the Malian has picked up an injury and it will be up to the likes of Shane Long and Danny Ings to shoulder the burden and increase their scoring ratios.

Bournemouth come into this game off the back of an impressive win over Everton, with Callum Wilson netting a brace and Ryan Fraser also scoring. Eddie Howe’s team have started the season well but have not yet put back to back victories together. They will be keen to change that by putting one over their south coast rivals and pulling away from them in the table. Bournemouth will also be concerned with the fact that they haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League and this is something that needs to be addressed as they come up against superior opposition. Howe is undoubtedly looking to push Bournemouth on to the next level but constantly conceding will impede them in their quest and this game is likely to produce plenty of goals.

In team news, Southampton will be without the aforementioned Moussa Djenepo who has a muscular problem. They will be buoyed by the return of defender Kevin Danso who is available after serving a suspension and the possible return of star winger Nathan Redmond.

Bournemouth have reported no fresh injury concerns and will so Eddie Howe could opt to go with much of the same team as he did in the win over Everton.

In recent meetings honours have been even between these two sides. Last season saw both fixtures end in draws, with the game at Bournemouth ending 0-0 but the game at St Mary’s sensationally finishing 3-3. The game ebbed and flowed as both teams enjoyed going ahead at various stages in the game only for honours to be shared. Shane Long, James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett scored for the home team with Dan Gosling and a Callum Wilson brace ensuring the two teams finished all square.
