St Mary’s Stadium

Punter's Pick

Both sides are enjoying the relative safety of mid-table at present, so this should be an open game with some goals on display – both teams should have enough quality to find the net and this can be backed at 10/11 with Bet365 to occur.

It’s hard to look past in-form Saints star Danny Ings to open the scoring, and the former Burnley man can haunt his former side by being the first player to find the net at 3/1 with Betfair, or alternatively take him at 10/11 to score anytime.

Eleventh takes on thirteenth as Southampton take on Burnley in a Saturday lunchtime clash, with only Burnley’s slightly superior goal difference separating the sides as both sit comfortably in mid-table on 31 points apiece.

Southampton beaten but not cowered at Anfield

The Saints last fixture saw them make the daunting trip to league leaders Liverpool, where up until the 52nd minute they were the better side and had the champions elect sufficiently rattled for long periods. A 4-0 defeat in the end was a harsh scoreline, with former Reds striker Danny Ings denied a potential penalty in the leadup to Liverpool’s first goal, after which the Saints were unable to get a foothold in the match.

The performance was validation for the recent upturn in Southampton’s results and performances, with an expected battle against relegation already looking a distant memory and a chance to finish in the top ten very much on.

Burnley mini run keeps them the clear of trouble

After a slight mid-season slump that threatened to suck the Clarets back into trouble, a mini run of form – seven points from their last three games has seen Burnley climb back into the relative safety of mid-table. Indeed manager Sean Dyche will be hoping the run continues for a little while longer as they look to be one of the first teams outside the top ten to reach the generally considered safe mark of 39 points and another season in the top flight assured.

Team News

Stuart Armstrong missed the FA Cup replay defeat to Spurs with a hip problem but could feature. James Ward-Prowse was stretchered off in the same game but could still feature, and Kyle Walker-Peters could make his debut at right-back following his loan move from Tottenham.

Burnley could be missing Matt Lowton and Charlie Taylor, with both defenders due to be assessed for injuries. Forward Ashley Barnes and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are definitely ruled out, but new signing Josh Brownhill could feature.

Saints to get back to winning ways?

Despite their setback at Liverpool last week, Southampton will not feel too disheartened and will look to end a five match winless sequence against Burnley. The Clarets may have won the reverse fixture 3-0 on the opening day of the season, but will find the going a lot tougher this time against a team that may have too much pace and guile for them to cope with on the day.
