St Mary’s Stadium

Punter's Pick

In the betting markets, Chelsea have been priced at 17/20 by Bet365 for victory and we feel this is good value for a Chelsea team on the rise. The form of Tammy Abraham has been impressive and he can be backed at 20/21 to score anytime.

Southampton welcome Chelsea to the St Mary’s Stadium with the home team looking for a win that will push them into the top half of the table. Chelsea will be looking to maintain their push for a Champions League spot and know anything other than a victory could see some of their rivals establish some daylight between them.

Southampton have played well in games this season but the recent form will have started to worry manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. The team has performed well on the road but have yet to register a home win in any competition this season. Impressive away wins at Brighton and Sheffield United in the Premier League have been complimented by two away wins in the League Cup at Fulham and Portsmouth. At home it has been a different story and the effect was compounded when they lost 3-1 to south coast rivals Bournemouth, despite getting a 1-1 draw with Manchester United earlier in the season. The Saints know that they must improve in front of their fans to ensure a strong run for a top half finish and dispel any notion of a potential relegation battle during the season.

Chelsea are starting to find their feet under manager Frank Lampard and have now won their last three games in all competitions. Prior to their Champions League game they beat Brighton 2-0 courtesy of goals from Jorginho and Willian and then won 2-1 away in Lille, with the impressive Tammy Abraham and Willian both scoring. Getting his first Champions League victory will be a huge boost for Lampard and he will be eyeing an upcoming fixture list which has some very winnable games ahead for the Blues.

In team news, Southampton will welcome back-up goalkeeper Alex McCarthy back into the squad but Winger Moussa Djenepo and defender Cedric Soares remain out for the Saints.

Chelsea will be without defenders Emerson and Antonio Rudiger which means there is again an opportunity for Kurt Zouma to stake his place for the rest of the season. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is still a long-term absentee but Chelsea will be buoyed by the news that N’Golo should be fit to play having come through the game at Lille in the week. He may still be monitored as a precaution to ensure he isn’t pushed too much too soon.

In recent years Chelsea have dominated this fixture but the Saints will take some confidence from last season. Despite Chelsea comfortably winning the game at St Mary’s 3-0, Southampton did manage to go to Stamford Bridge and claim a point after a 0-0 result. Hassenhutl will no doubt be looking at the formula from that game to stifle Chelsea and look to get something from the game.
