St Mary’s Stadium

Punter's Pick

Leicester City start this game as favourites but the bookies feel it will be a tough game for them. Bet365 are currently offering 13/10 for a Leicester win and we feel this is excellent value given the form of both teams. Southampton are struggling for goals and are leaky at the back, with the likes of Jamie Vardy, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison comfortably creating chances for Leicester. With the intensity of the Leicester team, we feel they could overrun Southampton and take the victory. Backing Leciester to win the corners market outright is also well priced at 4/5 with the same bookmaker.

Southampton welcome Leicester City to the St Mary’s Stadium to kick off the latest round of Premier League fixtures. Both teams sit at opposite ends of the table with Southampton struggling to string a set of results together, while Leicester have made an excellent start and occupy one of the Champions League spots.

Southampton come into this game having not won a Premier League game since mid-September despite some good performances. Having lost to both Tottenham and Chelsea, Southampton stopped the rot with a credible 1-1 draw away at Wolves, with Danny Ings putting the Saints ahead, only for Raul Jimenez to level from the penalty spot. Goals have certainly been in short supply for the Saints despite having two Premier League stalwarts to choose from in Danny Ings and Shane Long. However the midfield struggle to fashion the chances required to push on and turn some draws into wins. Manager Ralph Hassenhutl may look to the January transfer window to boost his options as six goals in their last six Premier League games shows how much they struggle to get the second goal which could have resulted in many more points.

Leicester City come into this game having won four out of their last five games in all competitions. The loss during that time was to a last minute penalty against league leaders Liverpool, but the Foxes have otherwise been consistent and have not felt the departure of Harry Maguire as many may have predicted. Jamie Vardy seems like a different player compared to when the team was coached by Claude Puel and currently has six goals in nine appearances. The form of James Maddison playing in just behind as well as Youri Tielemans has allowed the Foxes to maintain their impressive start and continue dreaming of a top four finish. Both Vardy and Tielemans scored in a comeback victory over Burnley last time out to build on their 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle.

In team news, Southampton will be buoyed by the news that Moussa Djenepo is back training with the team but this game is likely to come too soon for him. Cedric also remains sidelined with a calf injury but there doesn’t seem to be too many fresh injury concerns for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Leicester City have been boosted by the news that James Maddison is fully fit after the midfielder was substituted against Burnley as a precaution. Brendan Rodgers has no other injury concerns and he may lineup with the same team that secured a 2-1 win over Burnley last time out.

In recent meetings, honours have been even with both meeting three times last season and securing a win apiece and a draw in the League Cup. Leicester ultimately won the League Cup game on penalties to add to their 2-1 victory in this same fixture last season at St Mary’s. However the Saints did get their revenge when they won 2-1 at the King Power Stadium courtesy of goals from James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long.
