Punter's Pick

Danny Ings will be licking his lips at the prospect of the leakiest defence in the Premier League being in town, and is good value at 9/2 to open the scoring or 6/5 to find the net anytime with Bet365. Betfair have the draw at an appealing 3/1, and with neither team mustering back to back wins so far this season a draw looks an enticing prospect.

Two of the Premier League’s bottom three go head to head in a classic six pointer, as Southampton and Norwich City both look to build on mini revivals in recent weeks.

Recent results gives Canaries hope?

Whilst fellow strugglers Watford have parted company with their latest manager, both Southampton and Norwich City have held their nerve and have been rewarded with some recent encouraging promises. The Canaries were at their determined best to force a 2-2 result against Arsenal at the weekend, and indeed only some herorics from Gunners’ keeper Bernd Leno prevented them making it back to back league wins for the first time this season. The useful point against the Gunners came after a morale boosting away win over fellow strugglers Everton, keeping them in touching distance of the Toffees who currently languish one place outside the relegation places.

Saints picking up points to match performances at last

The Saints themselves picked up a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in recent weeks, and not unlike Norwich they may also still end up rueing several gilt edged chances to claim all three points come the final shakeup in May. A 2-1 win over Watford weekend in another crunch six pointer sets the home side perfectly up for this clash, with the 9-0 defeat to Leicester City a few weeks ago now appearing to be a distant memory as both performances and their points tally have improved since then.

Underrated forwards go head to head

Central to Southampton’s survival cause has been the form of Danny Ings, with the former Liverpool and Burnley striker finding the net regularly even in a struggling side to reach seven league goals so far this season. Not to be outdone, Norwich have a useful forward of their own finding the net, with Finnish striker Teemu Pukki ended a recent goal drought at the weekend to move level with Ings, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane on seven, and surprisingly ahead of Mo Salah (six). The form and fitness of both strikers will be crucial to this game and the fortunes of both sides as they look to haul themselves clear of the relegation places.

Team News

Saints midfielder Soufiane Boufal aggravated a freak toe injury sustained by running into his kitchen table at home against Watford, but he could recover sufficiently to make the bench.
Stuart Armstrong remains unavailable with a hamstring injury, but Jannik Vestergaard is fully fit and could come back into the side.

Norwich could have influential midfielder Alex Tettey available after missing Sunday’s game against Arsenal for personal reasons. Grant Hanley and Josip Drmic are struggling with groin and thigh injuries respectively and are rated 50-50 at best.

Tense encounter too close to call?

In a fixture that pits a side with almost the worst home record in the Premier League so far this season against the side that does currently hold the worst away record, there are no clear indicators who will come out on top. Both sides have shown some improvement in recent weeks, and the desire to avoid defeat against a fellow relegation candidate could see this play out as an entertaining clash but with the spoils being shared.
