Punter's Pick

Danny Ings has scored 50% of Southampton’s goals so far this season in the league, and is good value at 11/2 to open the scoring on Saturday. Watford to get a draw with the benefit of a +1 handicap is also an interesting 11/4 proposition, again with Bet365.

Relegation haunted Southampton and Watford go head to head on Saturday evening, with both sides in desperate need of a result as they look to battle their way out of the relegation places.

Southampton improving after 9-0 mauling?

It wasn’t too long ago that the Saints suffered the embarrassment of a 9-0 loss at home to Leicester City, a result that equalled the heaviest ever loss in the Premier League. To their credit since then the Saints have not thrown in the towel, running Manchester City close at the Etihad Stadium and then narrowly losing at home to Everton.

Last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal again showed some progression, as they outplayed their more illustrious opponents for long periods and will be bitterly disappointed not to come away with all three points after conceding a 96th minute equalizer. In truth they should have put the game to bed long before then, as they missed several gilt edged chances to be out of sight in the second half.

Woeful Watford back to square one?

After an initial upturn in performances and results under returning manager Quique Sanchez Flores, including a first win of the season, Watford were back to their dreadful worse last weekend. A meek 3-0 defeat at home to Burnley was rightly met with boos and jeers from the home crowd, as Watford put in one of their worse performances at home in recent memory.

The manner of the capitulation would have been particularly concerning for Flores, with his team tamely surrendering once they fell behind in the 53rd minute to a Burnley side that had not won away from Turf Moor all season until last weekend. With one third of the season gone the Hornets have only scored eight goals all season, and with a leaky defence as well it is difficult to see how they will climb out of trouble. With their next five fixtures reading Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester United and Sheffield United, a defeat here could push them beyond a point of no return by the end of December.

Team News

Watford were at least boosted by the return of Troy Deeney last weekend, the influential captain returned from the bench after a long injury lay off and will surely be pressed back into service in this crunch clash. Christian Kabasele returns from a one match suspension but Roberto Pereyra, Danny Welbeck and Tom Clevereley are all out through injury.

Southampton will have Jannik Vestergaard available again after he missed the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, with Jack Stephens the main most at risk if the giant Danish defender is recalled to the lineup.

Southampton’s greater intent can settle tense clash

Games between relegation battlers are usually tense affairs, and this is unlikely to be a thrilling or high scoring affair as both sides look to avoid defeat to the closest rival. Watford however are struggling for goals and generally have adopted a cautious approach since Flores took charge, and they may come unstuck against a Saints side that has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks.
