Punter's Pick

Danny Ings continues to impress as he battles to keep Southampton in the Premier League, and is good value at 15/4 to open the scoring with Bet365. Both sides rarely keep clean sheets, so Southampton win and both sides to score at 12/5 also looks like another cracking punt, again with Bet365.

A crunch clash at the bottom end of the Premier League table sees a Southampton side take on a fast sinking West Ham team, with their manager potentially on the brink of a pre Xmas exit.

Pellegrini close to the sack?

Much of the pre-match focus has been on the predicament of Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini, with the Argentine’s future under much scrutiny. A disastrous run of results which has seen his side win just once in their last nine league games (a run that has included seven defeats) has pushed the former Premier League winning manager to the brink of the exit door.

Monday’s abject performance against Arsenal, where despite his side being 1-0 up after 60 minutes, suggested that his team has already stopped playing for him. A three goal blitz in under ten minutes by Arsenal, achieved with the minimum of fuss as the Hammers defence caved in generously, gave a glimpse into just how far West Ham have fallen after those initial bright first few weeks of the season.

Saints continue to battle

Whilst not blessed with the same quality or depth of squad compared to Saturday’s visitors, the Saints have continued to show plenty of battling qualities, perhaps even more so after their 9-0 mauling by Leicester City. Despite the outcry after that result, the board have stuck with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, and results subsequently have picked up. A couple of league wins since that disastrous Friday evening, coupled with a useful point away at Arsenal has at least kept Southampton in touch with their fellow strugglers, and a positive result against West Ham could see them climb out of the relegation places for the first time this season.

Team News

Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong should be available for the first time in over a month after recovering from a hamstring injury. Yan Valery is again unavailable following a virus, while Sofiane Boufal continues to struggle with a toe injury following a freak accident at home.

West Ham remain will be without influential trio Manuel Lanzini, Lukasz Fabianski and Jack Wilshere. Aaron Cresswell was also forced off against Arsenal and Andriy Yarmolenko missed that game with a back problem, but the Hammers are optimistic both may be able to play a part on Saturday.

Saints to deliver another blow

Despite the gulf in quality of the two squads, the Saints are the ones who have been playing with belief and plenty of grit, both of which have been sadly missing for the Hammers for several months now. With an in-form Danny Ings ready to punish an increasingly fragile West Ham defence, this well could be Pellegrini’s final game as the Hammers manager, with a defeat likely to trigger a change.
