Punter's Pick

Manchester City are sure to see a lot of the ball with Spurs sitting back, and their possession should translate into plenty of corners in the game – 10 and above in total with Bet365 is available at Evens and looks a good value bet. The home side should be suitably compact and tight in defence, so do not expect a goalfest if Spurs’ performance against Liverpool a few weeks ago is anything to go by – 2.5 goals and under with Bet365 should be backed as Mourinho’s men look to frustrate their free flowing visitors.

Jose Mourinho resumes his duel with Pep Guardiola as his Tottenham side take on Manchester City, with the home side desperately in need of a morale boosting win to revive their Champions League qualifying hopes.

New faces to bolster home side?

It has been a busy week in the transfer marketing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with long serving midfielder Christian Eriksen finally departing after a season plagued by indifferent form and transfer rumours. His departure to Inter Milan was quickly followed by loanee Giovani Lo Celso’s move from Real Betis being made permanent, whilst Dutch winger Steve Bergwijn has arrived from PSV Eindhoven. With the transfer window deadline fast approaching a striker to replace the injured Harry Kane may still be secured, although some of the names mentioned such as Oliver Giroud are not of the same calibre of replacement for their captain and talisman. The cynics may argue that Mourinho would quite gladly use the failure of not replacing Kane as a convenient excuse should they fail to land any silverware this season or make it back into the top four.

City lose again…but progress

Unlike Spurs Manchester City have been quiet in the transfer window, with no significant additions to the squad. The failure to land a centre back in the summer now looks to have come back to haunt them, as they sit 19 points adrift of runaway league leaders Liverpool with a defence that has shipped 27 goals in 24 league fixtures so far this season.

Wednesday saw a three man defence breached by a Manchester United side minus their star striker Marcus Rashford, as an unconvincing 1-0 defeat saw the League Cup holders progress to their third successive final. With a tough looking assignment against Real Madrid in the Champions League to come, it may be that the cup competitions represent City’s best chance of salvaging a season that is sure to see them relinquish their Premier League crown.

Mourinho’s side to spring a surprise?

Spurs tried to go with an ultra defensive approach against league leaders Liverpool earlier in the season, a ploy that almost paid off in a 1-0 defeat, with the Reds restricted for long periods and Spurs contriving to miss two clear cut chances to equalize in the second half. Mourinho will likely to go for a similar setup against City, knowing full well that an open approach will see his side quickly pulled apart by City’s superior attacking talent. Spurs will look to their 1-0 home success in last season’s Champions League knockout fixture against City as a template, and with the pace of Lucas Moura and Heung Ming-Son in attack, they can prey on City’s vulnerabilities in defence and look to get a share of the spoils at the very minimum.
