Punter's Pick

Tottenham Hotspur welcome RB Leipzig to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an intriguing encounter between two exciting sides. Spurs will be looking to go one better than last season’s Champions League Final with Leipzig looking to make a splash as one of newer sides in the competition.

Tottenham come into this game unbeaten in their last seven competitive games including three wins on the bounce. Despite these results, Jose Mourinho will be concerned at some of the performances, with the team needing to grind out results against teams struggling in the league. This was illustrated last time out against Aston Villa where the Lilywhite’s needed a 95th minute winner from Heung-min Son to get the three points with the South Korean striking late to help them beat Norwich City in recent times as well. A major hallmark of any Mourinho team is usually the defence but he has been unable to get many clean sheets since coming to North London and this is something he will look to rectify in the summer. Thus far Son has been the talisman in recent times with good support from Lucas Moura and Dele Alli but they have had to be workmanlike and the loss of Christian Eriksen means someone else will have to provide the creative spark. Spurs will know that they will need a lead to take to Germany and may look to be aggressive right from the off in the hope that they have a sufficient lead to protect for the second leg.

RB Leipzig have had a great domestic season in Germany with the team challenging to break Bayern Munich’s grip on the championship. They currently sit just one point off the lead and despite losing less games than Bayern, an inability to turn some draws into wins has hurt them. They will also need to manage the workload of competing on multiple fronts which is something they’re not used to with the season entering its final stages.. The standout player has been Timo Werner who has hit 20 goals in 22 appearances in the league and he will be the major threat for Spurs to deal with. He has been ably supported by Patrik Shick and Marcel Sabitzer from midfield who have chipped in with crucial goals.

In team news, Tottenham remain without Harry Kane to a long-term injury as well as Moussa Sissoko, Erik Lamela and Juan Foyth. Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are both pushing to start as is Japhet Tanganga. Heung-min Son is likely to lead the line alongside Lucas Moura as Spurs look to establish an advantage at home.

RB Leipzig are without three of their main central defenders with Dayot Upamecano, Willi Orban and Ibrahima Konate all out due to either injury or suspension. They will also be without Tyler Adams and Kevin Kampl.

This encounter is shaping up to be an entertaining affair although picking an outright winner is difficult given the lack of history between the clubs. However, Spurs are now seasoned regulars in the Champions League and understand what is required to proceed. Under Mourinho they will be given the blueprint to succeed and we feel they should be backed at 11/8 with Bet365. The fact that Leipzig are without three of their main central defenders and Spurs will be pushing hard at home gives them the edge in the first-leg. Leipzig have also stuttered of late winning just one in their last five competitive games which have included two losses.
