Punter's Pick

Tottenham start this game as strong favourites with this being a home game and they currently sit above Southampton in the table. This game however has other markets that are better suited for the bettor with over 2.5 goals being priced at 4/7 by Bet365. Six out of the last seven games have produced at least three goals or more and Saturday is likely to follow a similar pattern. Over 10 corners is also generously priced at 5/6 and this is a market that has materialised in their last four encounters.

Tottenham host Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with both teams coming off the back of losses in the Premier League last time out. This game has historically delivered goals and fans will be hoping their team can be on the right of the result come 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham have struggled to capture their form of the past few seasons, winning just two of their opening six games. Well publicised reports in the media talk of fractures within the group and summer transfer speculation seems to have destabilised the group. An opening day win against newly promoted Aston Villa was achieved late in the game and the Lilywhite’s twice threw away the lead against Arsenal. A home defeat against unfancied Newcastle United and an away loss to Leicester City show the team are struggling for confidence and form, and in midweek they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester on penalties. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been brutally honest in his assessment of his players but knows that he needs to get the team playing together again and moving up the table as already a Champions League place is becoming a real battle.

Southampton come into the game having lost 3-1 to south coast rivals Bounemouth with Nathan Ake, Harry Wilson and Callum Wilson securing the points for the Cherries. The Saints have proven to be stable if not spectacular but good away victories at Brighton and Sheffield United shows how they enjoy playing on the road. The team managed to get back some confidence by beating another south coast rival in Portsmouth 4-0 during the week’s Carabao Cup game. Danny Ings scored a confidence boosting brace and he will need to step up to help drive the Saint’s push to finish in the top half of the table.

In team news, Tottenham are still without the services of their full-back signings from the summer in Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso. They will however look to reinstate Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris after resting the trio in the League Cup game. The remaining team selection will be interesting as Chrsitian Eriksen started the game against Leicester on the bench. Pochettino may be forced to reintroduce his playmaker despite a summer in which it seemed the Dane wanted out. Lucas Moura could also be pushing for a starting place but Heung-min Son and Harry Kane are likely to lead the line.

Southampton will be sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after he picked up a slight injury in the game against Portsmouth. Moussa Djenepo is still out injured and fans will want to see the exciting forward back after he scored a spectacular solo goal earlier in the season.

In recent meetings, honours have been shared between the two sides. Both claimed home victories last season with Spurs winning 3-1 courtesy of goals from Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son. However the Saints hit back winning 2-1 at home with Yan Valery and James Ward-Prowse cancelling out Harry Kane’s opener.
