Vicarage Road

Punter's Pick

In the markets, Watford start this game as favourites but we feel that Aston Villa are in with a shout of getting something from the game. The Villans are priced at 5/6 for a Double Chance with this market materialising if they avoid defeat. We think this is a good shout as they can be well drilled defensively and their chances will be boosted if Deeney is rested for large periods of the game. The last games played between these two were highly competitive and combative games and we will be backing the over 4.5 cards market at 11/10 with the same bookmaker.

Watford welcome Aston Villa to Vicarage Road in a real six-pointer between two teams currently sitting in the relegation zone. Villa could extend their lead over Watford to eight points if they win, with the home side looking to continue their fine form under Nigel Pearson to pull the deficit back to two.

Watford have greatly improved since Nigel Pearson took over and despite losing his opening game to Liverpool, the signs were there that the team were playing better and would start to be successful during the season. This materialised when Watford outfought and outplayed Manchester United at home winning 2-0 courtesy of goals from Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney. The team followed that up with a credible 1-1 draw away at high-flying Sheffield United and the return to confidence of some players is clear to see. Gerard Deulofeu is one player who has had a resurgence under Pearson often carrying the ball and taking the fight to the opposition. The return of Troy Deeney has also boosted their ranks and with the team being well drilled at the back, there are signs that the manager could manufacture another great escape.

Aston Villa stopped their league rot with a 1-0 win over Norwich City last time out. The Villans had lost four games on the bounce until that point and were thankful to a Conor Hourihane strike that secured all three points. Jack Grealish was again the driving force, often picking up the ball and carrying it forward whilst dictating play from the pocket behind the strikers. The main concern for Dean Smith will be the contribution of his strikers who are struggling to get the number of goals required to help them put games to bed and push up the table. Wesley has had a difficult season and the likes of Trezeguet, Grealish and Hourihane are having to come up with the goals from midfield which is causing an issue. Villa had not scored more than one goal in their last four league games and this is what needs to be addressed by the manager in January.

In team news Watford are hopeful that exciting winger Ismaila Sarr will be fit and available despite suffering a swollen eye after colliding with an advertising board. There are reports Troy Deeney could be rested given his injury issues but that will be a big call given the significance of this game and his effect on the team.

For Villa, Conor Hourihane will be pushing for a starting berth after his winning goal against Norwich and contributions over the season. Tyrone Mings and Keinan Davis also hope to be in contention after their respective injuries.

These two teams last met in the 2015/16 season in the Premier League and Watford won both games. Incredibly the scoreline in those fixtures was 3-2 to the Hornets showing how close these two were, but with Troy Deeney getting the crucial goals in both fixtures, his ability proved to be the difference.
