Vicarage Road

Punter's Pick

Betfair have Chelsea at a reasonably attractive 5/7 to come away with all three points, and this looks to be decent value given their current run of form and Watford’s poor record against the Blues. Tammy Abraham has been quiet in recent weeks and is due a goal – the striker can be backed at 10/3 to open the scoring on Saturday.

In-form Chelsea take on rock bottom Watford in a London Derby that in theory would seem to be a foregone conclusion given the current trajectories of the two sides.

Omens not good for hosts

With no wins in their opening ten league games, Watford remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, currently four points adrift of safety. New manager Quique Sanchez Flores has at least stabilized the side to a certain extent, with Watford drawing their last three games, including a credible 1-1 draw away at Spurs and two clean sheets in their current sequence of draws. However with only five goals scored all season – a league low, compared to the 23 scored so far this season by the visitors, it is not hard to see why the Hornets are struggling at the foot of the table.

If the task wasn’t already hard enough for the home side, their recent form against Chelsea does not bode well. With just one win in their last eleven league games against the Blues, they will not exactly be brimming with confidence with both current form and recent history firmly in the visitor’s favour.

Exciting attack masking defensive deficiencies for the Blues
Although a run of seven league and cup wins was brought to a halt with a 2-1 midweek defeat in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United, Chelsea will still be brimming with confidence as they look to make it five straight league wins. A 4-2 win last weekend away at Burnley again underlined how well their attack is shaping up under Frank Lampard, with Christian Pulisic serving notice of his ability with a hat-trick to blow away the Clarets.

However despite the goals flowing, things are not looking so rosy at the back for the Blues. Sixteen goals conceded in their opening ten games suggests Chelsea although flowing in attack can be vulnerable at the back, and Watford will have duly noticed this as they look to find a morale boosting win against opponents they have struggled with in recent seasons.

Team News

N’Golo Kante is a big doubt for the Blues, the influential French midfielder has been struggling with a number of injuries so far this season, the latest of which being a hamstring problem. Manager Frank Lampard may not risk his key midfielder with Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Ajax in mind. Defenders Andreas Christensen, Anthony Rudiger and Emerson Palmieri are all also struggling as to is Ross Barkley, who may just about make the bench.

Watford also have a number of injury concerns, with experienced trio Troy Deeney, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley all set to remain on the sidelines. Watford’s own influential midfielder Etienne Capoue is also a major doubt, leaving Nathaniel Chalobah and Will Hughes in contention to start in midfield.

Blues quality likely to prove too much

Despite tightening up their defence in recent weeks, Chelsea are playing with bags of confidence upfront, with numerous goal threats that should prove too much for the home side to handle. Watford’s own blunt attack is unlikely to provide enough of a threat against the Blues’ shaky defence, and the visitors should be able to match last season’s away win at Vicarage Road.
