Punter's Pick

Liverpool have not quite been at the races since the winter break, particularly at the back, so Watford may be able to nick a goal – the trouble is they cannot keep a clean sheet themselves. Therefore both teams to score but Liverpool to win at 7/5 with Bet365 looks to be an excellent proposition.

Liverpool’s front three have all feasted upon Watford in recent seasons, none more so than Mo Salah – back the Egpytian king at ⅘ to score anytime against a leaky Watford backline and close in on ten goals against the hapless Hornets.

League leaders Liverpool’s relentless quest for their first Premier League can take another step closer on Saturday against struggling Watford, with another win for the Reds bringing them to within three wins of a guaranteed title.

Reds struggling for rhythm since winter break?

Whilst Liverpool may have won both their Premier League fixtures since the resumption after the winter break, the manner of the 1-0 victory over Norwich City and 3-2 home win against West Ham on Monday would suggest they are not quite up to speed yet. The manner in which West Ham gave them a scare will be of particular interest to Watford, who are likely to deploy a similar formation and style of play that frustrated the Reds for long periods until some generous goalkeeping allowed them back into the match and on to an eventual victory.

Those two wins sandwiched a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, where again the league leaders looked far from their best, struggling for fluidity and being frustrated by Madrid’s two banks of four.

Struggling Watford need a result

The reverse fixture marked the start of Nigel Pearson’s rein at Watford, and his side could feel hard done by as they went down 2-0 at Anfield, despite creating numerous chances to score. Such wasteful finishing has also been evident in recent weeks, with Pearson’s side slipping to five wins without a victory and back into the relegation places. However with all the sides around them losing last weekend, Watford remain just one point from safety.

Team News

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson remains out with a hamstring injury, whilst vice-captain is also struggling with a muscle injury. Xherdan Shaqiri is also still out, otherwise manager Jurgen Klopp has a fully fit squad to choose from, and it will be interesting if he considers any rotation from his usual preferred starting XI with the FA Cup clash with Chelsea to follow next week.

For Watford Kiko Femenia is fit after a hamstring injury but may not be risked against the league leaders, whilst fellow defender Daryl Janmaat has also returned to full training but again may not be risked.

Reds to keep marching on?

Despite stumbling to wins in their last two games against Watford’s fellow relegation candidates, Liverpool still seem to find a way to get the job done, and it is difficult to see Watford getting something from this game on the back of their current form and leaky defence. Whilst the Reds have rarely blown teams away this season, they should be able to see off Watford again for the fifth successive time.
