Vicarage Road

Punter's Pick

A draw at 5/2 with Bet365 looks appealing, with neither side playing with much confidence or looking like they can deliver the knockout punch at this stage of the season. Both defences are looking shaky so back 8/13 with Betfair for both teams to find the net.

The first London derby of the season pitches Watford against West Ham United, with both sides searching for their first win of the new campaign after indifferent starts.

Early warning signs for Hornets?

After an impressive debut season at Vicarage Road, manager Javi Gracia is finding things slightly more difficult second time round, with back to back defeats to kick off this campaign, and with not even a single goal scored so far. In fact their last six games stretching back into last season now read 1-0, 3-0, 6-0, 4-1, 3-0 and 2-1 – a very alarming six game losing streak.

The 4-1 loss in that sequence ironically enough came at home against Saturday’s visitors, hardly inspiring confidence that the losing run is ready to come to an end. That afternoon saw Jose Holebas sent off for the Hornets as a Mark Noble brace inspired West Ham to a comfortable stroll at Vicarage Road.

Hammers recover from opening day mauling

It hasn’t exactly been an inspiring start for the Hammers either, as an opening day battering by champions Manchester City once again merely illustrated the gulf between the elite Premier League sides and those with ambition to break into the top six such as West Ham. They did however recover sufficiently enough to pick up a useful point away at Brighton last weekend to open their points tally for the season.

That point came courtesy of veteran striker Javier Hernandez, who once again continues to show his class and pedigree, leading the line manfully in the absence of other more illustrious names and proving he still has much to offer in the top flight.

Team News

Hernandez may have more competition for a starting place this weekend, with Felipe Anderson nearing full fitness. The influential forward has been sorely missed in the opening stages of the new season, and if passed fit will add much needed creativity and spark to West Ham’s labouring frontline. The Hammers may further be boosted by the return of record signing Sebastien Haller. The striker sat out the 1-1 draw with Brighton with a knee injury, but could return to provide further competition for places on Saturday.

For the Hornets, record signing Ismaila Sarr has resumed training after an extended break following his African Cup of Nations exertions for Senegal. The pacy winger would add real bite and power, and Hornet’s fans should get the first glimpses off him this weekend, probably off the bench.

Stalemate may suit both teams?

With neither team playing with particular confidence so far this campaign, and Watford desperate to end a run of losses stretching back to last season, an entertaining draw may be on the cards. Watford’s calamitous opening day 3-0 defeat to Brighton will play heavily on their minds, but if Felipe Anderson and Sebastian Haller do not pass their respective fitness tests, they will be confident of keeping things much tighter and grinding out at least a point to get their season finally up and running.
