Local rivals Watford take on West Ham United as both teams look to see out relatively comfortable and successful Premier League campaigns with a final flourish, with ninth place in the Premier League potentially still up for grabs for both clubs.

Ninth place permutations add further spice to local derby

To add some further spice and competitiveness to what could have been a dull end of season clash, ninth placed and several additional million pounds in prize money is up for grabs for both sides, as they go head to head with Leicester City in a three way battle. A win for Leicester at home to Chelsea will effectively end both these sides chances of claiming ninth, however a draw or loss then opens up some interesting permutations. West Ham will need the Foxes to lose and to beat Watford to leapfrog both sides into the top half of the table, whilst Watford likewise due to an inferior goal difference will need the Foxes to slip up and see off West Ham to claim ninth position.

Successful season for Watford regardless of outcome

Regardless of the outcome and if they finish ninth or eleventh if results do not go their way on Sunday, it has already been a hugely successful season for the Hornets. Manager Javi Gracia must take huge credit for what Watford have achieved this campaign, with a top ten finish in sight alongside a FA Cup Final against Manchester City still to look forward to. A possible place in Europe would be fitting reward for a team that has rarely looked in poor form all season. The challenge for the manager and club will now be to retain all of their current squad and look to bring in a handful of top class acquisitions as they look maintain their top ten status next season and set their sights higher still, possibly pushing on to be the top team outside of the established top six.

Underwhelming season for Hammers?

Despite the relative comfort of mid-table security for the Hammers, their remains a lurking suspicion the team could, and should have been achieving a lot more this season given the calibre of players at their squad. After a healthy transfer outlay in the summer, including bringing in exciting new players such as Felipe Anderson to complement what was already a strong squad, the Hammers will be looking with some regret at teams like Wolves who have claimed seventh place, and Watford who look set to combine a top ten finish with a FA Cup Final appearance. Manager Manuel Pellegrini will surely be under pressure to deliver more next season, with the club looking to be set again to splash the cash in the summer as they look to gatecrash the top six party over the coming seasons.
