Molineux

Punter's Pick

The markets have respected Wolves in this game as United are priced well over evens at 13/10 to win this game despite their emphatic opening day win. Bet365 are also offering 6/5 on over 2.5 goals and we feel this is a market that offers great value given the score lines in recent fixtures between the two.

Wolverhampton Wanderers welcome Manchester United to Molineux in the final game of this week’s fixtures. Both teams have started the season well and they will each feel that they have a great chance of grabbing all three points.

Wolves have played five games already since the 25th July due to their involvement in the Europa League’s qualifying stages. They come into this game having won all four of their qualifying games and were especially impressive against Pyunik Yerevan winning 4-0. They also got a well-earned point away at Leicester on the opening day of the season and were unlucky not to get all three as Leander Dendoncker’s goal was ruled out after a VAR review. The team that finished in the ‘best of the rest’ places last season will be hoping that they can continue to build on their impressive form, with much resting on the strikeforce of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez.

Manchester United started their campaign with a dream performance against top-four rivals Chelsea. A 4-0 home victory saw Marcus Rashford net a double, with Anthony Martial and Daniel James also scoring. Solskjaer will be all too aware of calming the players and fans down after such a performance and getting them to refocus on the task at hand as Wolves have proven to be a bogey team in recent seasons. Solskjaer enjoyed similar elation and praise when he took over the club last season, going 11 games unbeaten before tasting his first competitive defeat. This was followed by a run of just two victories in 12 games so the United legend won’t be getting carried away and will want a victory on Monday night.

In team news, Wolves have thus far reported no injury concerns and are likely to field the same lineup that secured a point against Leicester. Raul Jimenez should partner Diogo Jota up front with the likes of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho providing the creative spark. This was the formula Wolves used last season, as a consistent lineup ensured that players had gotten used to each other’s playing styles which translated into results on the pitch. The issue this season will be what options they have should there be injuries to key personnel, especially with Europa League football.

Manchester United could also opt to maintain the same starting lineup after such an impressive display against Chelsea. Eric Bailly is the one absentee through injury and this game looks to have come too soon for Alexis Sanchesz. Solskjaer could be tempted to rotate to ensure everyone gets game time with Juan Mata being the strongest candidate to potentially replace one of United’s midfield with his craft and guile. Scott McTominay’s assured performance is likely to keep Nemanja Matic out of the team.

Last season these teams played each other three times and Wolves won two and drew the other. The game at Old Trafford finished in a draw courtesy of goals from Fred and Joao Moutinho for the visitors. Wolves then sprung a surprise by beating United 2-1 in the FA Cup and repeated the trick a few weeks later by achieving the same scoreline despite going a goal down. A Diogo Jota strike and Chris Smalling own-goal secured all three points and United will be keen to get this particular monkey off their back on Monday night.
