Title chasing Manchester City visit inconsistent Bournemouth, as the defending champions seek to go back to the top of the table.

City look to make it five league wins in a row

After their shock 2-1 defeat away to Newcastle United, the pressure of the title race looked to be getting to Manchester City as Liverpool looked to be pulling away to an insurmountable lead. However, a four game winning sequence has seen the defending champions narrow to the deficit back to just one point, with Liverpool the team looking more likely to crack first in the title race. City’s winning streak has coincided with the Reds dropping points against West Ham and Manchester United away respectively, and also failing to beat Leicester City at home 24 hours after City’s loss to Newcastle.

Having bagged the first silverware of the season too in the shape of the Carabao Cup, City have renewed momentum as they enter the final quarter of the season, with the Champions League and FA Cup very much on the horizon. Wednesday’s 1-0 against West Ham United also showed their resolve to break down stubborn opponents even when not at their best. It is difficult to see where the Citizens will drop points again this season, with a Manchester Derby to come looking to be the pivotal match in their league campaign.

Bournemouth season stuttering over the finish line

By contrast, City’s opponents on Saturday already seem to have one eye on the end of the season, particularly if their away form is anything to go by. Bournemouth are winless in their last four league games, and come into this match off the back of a 5-1 thrashing at Arsenal. Their defence on Wednesday at times looked like it already had one eye on the summer holidays, as time after time they conceded too much space to their opponents.

Manager Eddie Howe will not be pleased with recent form, as although his side is in no imminent danger of getting sucked into a relegation battle, he will not want to start next season off the back of a limp finish to this one.

Mixed home record against top six

If City needed any wake up call to guard against complacency, the Cherries fantastic 4-0 win against Chelsea will no doubt have them thinking about what Bournemouth side will turn up on Saturday. Narrow home defeats (both 2-1) against Arsenal and Manchester United also serve as further proof of what the hosts are capable of, with Liverpool’s 4-0 win at the Vitality Stadium a rare capitulation in front of their home fans.

Team News

Bournemouth forward Callum Wilson could be available after a six-week absence with a knee injury, and would be a welcome boost to the starting XI or from the bench. David Brooks was an unused substitute following his return from injury against Arsenal and will be pushing for a return, but Jefferson Lerma is banned and Steve Cook, Dominic Solanke and Junior Stanislas remain out.

Manchester City pair John Stones and Gabriel Jesus are fit after missing the past three games through injury, but City will have to do without Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho and Fabian Delph. Left-back Benjamin Mendy was on the bench against West Ham after overcoming his most recent knee injury and will be pushing for some playing time.
