In form Chelsea resume their battle for a top four spot as they welcome seventh placed Wolves to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea turning a corner since bruising defeats to Manchester clubs?

After their spectacular 6-0 capitulation away at Manchester City, followed on quickly by a limp 2-0 defeat at home in the FA Cup to Manchester United, Chelsea’s season was in danger of quickly unravelling. Manager Maurizio Sarri in particular seemed to be hanging on to his job by a thread, with ‘Sarri Ball’ widely derided by fans and media alike. However a five game unbeaten run (if not considering a penalty shootout defeat in the Carabao Cup final a defeat) has seen renewed optimism at the club, with a two pronged attack on the Champions League back on via a top four push and the Europa League. In particular the recent 2-0 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur bore all the trademarks of a classic Chelsea win, as they completely wore down their opponents and ultimately forced them into mistakes as they took all three points to reignite their league campaign.

Wolves a dangerous opponent

Chelsea’s opponents will prove a tricky prospect, as seventh placed Wolves lead the chasing pack to finish the best placed team outside the established top six. A surprise 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town is their only league defeat in seven games, and throw in a run to the Quarter Final of the FA Cup, and it is turning into an thrilling debut season in the top flight for manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

The newly promoted club have also not been overawed against the top six teams away from home either, giving Chelsea plenty to ponder. They have already picked up draws away at Manchester United and Arsenal this season, as well as an excellent 3-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

Chelsea out to avenge defeat at Molineux

The Blues have already been on the receiving end of a Wolves ambush this season, as they were turned over 2-1 by Sunday’s opponents at Molineux. That defeat came despite Chelsea appearing to be relatively comfortable at 1-0, before goals from Diogo Jota and Raul Gimenez in the space of five minutes turned the game on it’s head. Chelsea will need to guard against something similar happening again, with Wolves chasing their sixth away league win of the season.

Team News

Chelsea rested several key players for their midweek Europa League stroll against Dynamo Kiev, and the likes of Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante expected to be restored back to the starting XI.

Wolves will be without the influential Ryan Bennett, with the defender having racked up ten yellow cards and earned himself an automatic two game suspension as a result. Rui Patricio is likely to return in goal after being rested against Cardiff City last weekend.

Chelsea’s good form likely to continue

Despite Wolves’ excellent recent form and record against the top six sides, Chelsea appear to have turned a corner and should edge what is likely to be a high quality clash. Wolves’ defeat to Huddersfield Town was a timely reminder there is still much for them to learn in the top flight, and with Chelsea’s big guns returning after being rested in midweek, they will feel they can keep the feel good factor going another week with a win.

Both teams have been in good form defensively without blowing opposition teams away, so 2.5 goals and under at 19/20 to Betfair looks appealing. Wolves to sneak a draw with a +1 goal handicap also looks appealing, and is available at 5/2 with Bet365.
