Italian giants Juventus take on the perennially stubborn Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Stadium, attempting to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

Can Juventus keep up Second Round miracles?

In many a season gone by, a 2-0 first leg margin would normally be considered to be a reasonably comfortably scoreline going into the second leg. However with last week’s Champions League results, particularly eye catching turnarounds by Ajax against Real Madrid and Manchester United against Paris Saint Germain, no scoreline seems to be safe. Atletico will certainly not be taking for granted their first leg lead, and an early Juventus goal will sure to get the crowd at the intimate 41,500 capacity Allianz Stadium rocking.

Ease of domestic titles impacting performances in Europe?

Following a routine 4-1 victory over Udinese on the weekend, achieved despite resting several key players, the Old Lady are now a massive nineteen points clear of second placed Napoli. Theoretically they need only to win six of their last eleven games to guaranteed to be champions for an eighth consecutive season, although in reality Napoli are likely to drop points between now and the end of campaign, so three to four wins will probably do it.

The fact that Juve are so far ahead of the chasing pack in Italy, and have been for approaching nearly a decade is a damning indictment of other teams of Italy and their mis-management, but also may be feeding into their European performances. Unlikely to face a team that presses with the ferocity or intensity of Atletico Madrid domestically, Juve were found wanting the first leg and not able to get a foothold in the game at any stage.

Atletico in fine form coming into the return leg

If things were already not looking difficult enough for Juve, their opponents come into this clash on the back of a five game winning run, including the 2-0 success in the first leg. That sequence has involved not conceding a single goal, as Diego Simeone’s men look to be back to their ruthless best both in defence and attack. Their last defeat and goals conceded came in a 3-1 home defeat to bitter rivals Real Madrid, demonstrating how they have tightened up at the back considerably in recent weeks.

However if Juve thought it was a thankless task possibly having to score at least two, if not three of four goals to reach the next round, they can take heart from Atletico being uncharastically generous defensively in a few games this season. The group stages saw the Spanish side crushed 4-0 away at Borussia Dortmund, showing that they can be got at. They have also conceded three goals to the Real Madrid and minnows Girona, so all does not appear to be lost for Juve.

Team News

Juventus rested several key players for their weekend stroll against Udinese, and the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, and Giorgio Chiellini should be restored to the starting XI. Sami Khedira remains sidelined by a heart problem, the midfielder suffering from an irregular heartbeat.

For Atletico, Diego Costa limped off in the first leg and is set to be missing, but in his place on loan Alvaro Morata has found form, netting three goals in his last three games, and is expected to lead the line against another one of his former clubs.

Juventus may edge it, but Atletico can strike crucial away goal

Juventus have yet to beat Atletico in three previous meetings, and the pressure to win will be immense on the Italian champions. The Old Lady may find a way to win, but Atletico’s quality in attack and danger from set pieces should see them net a crucial away goal to put enough daylight between themselves and Juve.

Juventus can gain their first Champions League success against their opponent, and a 2-1 win for the home team at 15/2 looks particularly interesting with Bet365. With enough firepower on both teams to breach defences, both teams to score at Evens with Betfair also merits a further look.
