Liverpool v Watford

Premier League: Wed, 27/02  Stadium: Anfield

vs.

In the markets, it may be worth backing under 2.5 goals with Bet365, who are offering 6/4. This looks generous given Liverpool’s recent struggles in front of goal. The teams were also 0-0 at half-time in the earlier fixture in the season, so it may be worth backing this with a view to cashing out after 25-30 minutes. With Liverpool looking to increase the intensity, it is a game that is likely to have a high card count, which is why over 2.5 at 4/5 with Bet365 also looks like excellent value..

Liverpool look to continue their quest for a first Premier League title when they host Watford on Wednesday night. The Reds were disappointing in their last game against arch rivals Manchester United, but still remain top. However an in-form and high-flying Watford will be no pushovers, having lost just once in their last 11 games in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking to raise his players after they registered four draws in their last five games, at times playing lethargically and without creativity. The same front three have burdened most of the responsibility throughout the season, as their midfielders find it difficult to get involved and contribute goals. The sight of three Manchester United players going off injured in the first half wasn’t enough to galvanise the Reds to push on for victory and they need to get back to winning ways as the gap over City is now a solitary point.

Javi Gracia and his men have been very impressive this year and currently sit in 7th place. An excellent 5-1 victory away at Cardiff saw Deulofeu score a hattrick and talisman troy Deeney net a brace. Watford are the type of opponents Liverpool have struggled against at times – a team willing and able to sit and absorb pressure when needed but still have the pace and strength to hit on the counter-attack.

Liverpool did run out 3-0 winners in their clash earlier in the season. Second half goals from Mo Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Firmino sealed a very good away win. However as the finishing line approaches, Liverpool have stuttered in recent weeks and Watford have the players to cause panic in the box and the strength to give Liverpool a real test.

In team news, Liverpool will be sweating on the fitness of Roberto Firmino. As alluded to, Liverpool don’t have the strength in depth as Manchester City, and the front three including Firmino have had to share the goals. Without him there to link play and bring others in to the game could be a real issue. Daniel Sturridge has hardly featured and Origi is more of an impact sub than someone who can lead up front over 90 minutes. Dejan Lovren is also likely to miss out having been away for Liverpool’s last seven games. They will however be buoyed by the news that Oxlade-Chamberlain has restarted training, but this game is likely to come too soon for him.

For Watford, full back Jose Holebas will remain out as he is still serving his suspension but the vast majority of Gracia’s squad is available for selection.
