Newcastle United v Everton

Premier League: Sat, 9/03  Stadium: St James’ Park

vs.

As this is likely to be an encounter where both teams can cancel each other out for large periods of the game, an under 11 corners market seems like a good bet at 5/6 with Bet365. With Newcastle also difficult to beat in recent time and especially strong at home, a +1 goal handicap at 1/2 seems like a good proposition.

Newcastle welcome Everton having eased their relegation fears in recent weeks, but Rafa Benitez knows that a couple of bad results could drag them straight back towards the bottom. Everton enter this game in great spirits having dented Liverpool’s title aspirations with a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. This continues a mini turnaround under Marco Silva and the Portuguese will be looking for all three points here.

Prior to their 2-0 loss against West Ham, Newcastle had won four out of their six Premier League games to help open up a gap between them and the drop zone. Crucial wins against fellow strugglers Cardiff City and Huddersfield were eclipsed by their amazing 2-1 reverse against champions Manchester City. But a poor start against the Hammers saw Newcastle go a goal down in the first 10 minutes, with a Mark Noble penalty putting the result beyond doubt. But Newcastle are a different proposition at home, winning four out of their last five league games and will be confident of adding to their points tally against an inconsistent Everton.

Marco Silva has managed to keep the wolves at bay after winning 3-0 away at Cardiff and holding rivals Liverpool to a draw in their last game. Prior to that the Toffees had lost three games in a row, with fans increasingly calling for the manager to be sacked. Recent results may have bought Silva some time but he needs to keep the momentum up if Everton are to secure their top half status come the end of the season.

The two teams played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the season with Salomon Rondon giving Newcastle the lead only for record signing Richarlison to equalise. Everton dominated the game with over 76% possession but Benitez still managed to hold out and secure his team the draw. This game is also likely to be a cagey affair as the setup of both teams has been more defensive in recent games. Newcastle have only conceded five goals in their last six games and Everton have kept clean sheets in their last two.

In team news, Newcastle will hurt by the news that their youngest ever goalscorer Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Otherwise Benitez has a near full strength squad to choose from.

For Everton, Richarlison and Andre Gomes will both be looking to start having been benched for the Liverpool game. Brazilian Richarlison came on and affected the game, taking a direct approach at the Liverpool back line and causing concern whenever he went forward. Gomes is the type of player who has the ability to control a game and this is a key quality whenever a team comes up against a well organised Newcastle side.
