Porto v Liverpool

Champions League: Wed, 17/04  Stadium: Estádio do Dragão

vs.

In the betting markets we feel that backing Liverpool at 11/10 with Bet365 is excellent value. As mentioned before, the Reds overran their opponents just last year with the game now set up to play to Liverpool’s strengths. Backing over 9 corners at 4/6 could also be a good bet as Porto need to go for the result and Liverpool’s ability to attack on the wing makes this game conducive to a high corner count.

Porto welcome Liverpool to the Estádio do Dragão with the monumental task of overturning a 2-0 first leg defeat. However the Portuguese are a different proposition at home having lost just twice all season, with Liverpool struggling in the earlier stages away from home.

Porto like Liverpool are engaged in a very tight title domestically, currently sitting on the same points as their rivals Benfica and at risk of losing the title on goal difference. They need to ensure their situation at home doesn’t make them lose focus against a Liverpool team brimming with confidence after reclaiming their position at top of the league. Porto have won five league games on the bounce after their home loss against Benfica and will be looking back at their 3-1 home win over Roma after they were beaten 2-1 away. Moussa Marega scored their second goal on that night and he put in the most impressive performance at Anfield. The Portuguese side will be looking to take the initiative early and get the first goal after which they will be confident of going on and getting the desired result.

Liverpool are buzzing on the back of their 2-0 home win against Chelsea which restored them to the top of the Premier League. Mo Salah has once again found form after his stunning goals against Southampton and Chelsea and Liverpool will be confident of going to Portugal and winning the game. As with the game at Manchester City in the league, Liverpool can sometimes be caught between going for the jugular or trying to play more conservatively for a result and this will be the key decision Jurgen Klopp needs to make. The German however has insisted that his team will be going to Portugal to ‘fight with all they have’ to secure their passage to the semi-final and expects Porto to be a ‘different animal’ in their own backyard.

In team news, Liverpool have omitted Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from their matchday squad with the Croatian suffering with an illness and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return coming too early for a fixture of this magnitude and intensity. Liverpool will however be boosted by the return of Joe Gomez from a long-term injury, although Joel Matip is likely to continue partnering Virgil van Dijk in this game. Jordan Henderson has also travelled with the team despite suffering a knock on the ankle during the game against Chelsea.

Porto will welcome back Portuguese international and former Real Madrid defender Pepe alongside Hector Herrera who both missed the loss at Anfield. Klopp said that “Having a centre-half and number six or number eight back is massive for them” and understands that this fixture is likely to be much more difficult than the first leg.

Although Porto have been strong at home Liverpool won’t fear travelling there as they will have fond memories of playing at the Estádio do Dragão having won there 5-0 just last season. Liverpool’s front three all scored with Sadio Mane bagging a hattrick. Their 2-0 home win will ensure that the Reds go into this fixture knowing that their pace attack can exploit any Porto pressure through their devastating counter-attacks.
